At least, you have to collect as many Sun Medals and Moon Medals as possible in order to proceed with the story. It's counter-intuitive to a Sonic game, and what's even more infuriating is that you HAVE to collect them. But what grinds my gears more is that they're peppered throughout all of the Hedgehog and Hedgwolf stages, and you have to constantly backtrack and slow down to grab them all. I hate how many collectables there are in this game, because yes, there is such a thing as "too many collectables". My biggest problem with the gameplay however has to be the collectables.
Overall, both forms are fine to play with, though they could have ironed out a few of the flaws. There are many moves to learn for the Hedgewolf that keep the gameplay from getting repetitive. Not amazing it's pretty standard beat-'em'up material, but it's well-done at least. The Hedgewolf may be a dumb idea, but his gameplay is surprisingly fine.
Not a good combination that will lead to a lot of frustration. The Hedgehog controls a bit too stiffly for my taste, and his movements are too floaty and janky.
As for the gameplay, it is a definite improvement over Sonic 2006, and really nailed the feeling of Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay. It just makes exploring hub worlds actually relaxing and comforting because each place feels so lively. And the locations, without argument, are all beautifully designed too. I've heard that people still complained over the designs of the NPCs as just "too weird", but that pisses me off, because there is no better look for humans in a Sonic game than these characters. The areas and the people are all so beautifully designed and drawn if humans were to ever show up in a Sonic game again, they HAVE to look like this, because the character designs really suit the Sonic style, and have each and every character feel unique with their individual appearances. It really does feel like a World Adventure. The idea of travelling a fictional world that has locations inspired by real locations is a great idea. The strides they took to make Sonic a cartoony character again, yet have an adventure that feels grand and epic really paid off with this game.
But the reason why it still works because of sheer heart and effort, despite its terrible concept. Not because of the Werehog (or "Hedgewolf"), because it is still a monumentally stupid idea. 21h 58m Played It's really crazy to think that after such a colossal disaster that was Sonic 2006, Sonic Team still took a great risk by turning Sonic into a werewolf for their next game.
